First Full Day Of Life

Today was Trey’s first full day of life.  It was full of lots of doctors and procedures.  This probably made him a little crabbier than yesterday, but he is still overall a very happy little boy.  He continues to eat very well and has caused some pretty good damage to a number of diapers.  Both Kim and I were able to get out and walk around the hospital a little today, which was especially nice for Kim since she hadn’t left our room since yesterday afternoon.  There is still a ton of snow on the ground and it is very cold outside, so we are glad to stay at the hospital another night.  We should be dismissed around noon or a little before tomorrow.

Introducing Edward John Paff III

Edward John Paff III (Trey) was born at 1:40 MST at the SkyRidge Hospital in Lone Tree, Colorado. He weighed in at seven pounds fifteen ounces and was twenty and a half inches tall. He has blue eyes currently and quite a bit of dark hair. Both Trey and Kim are doing great, though a little tired. Trey has been sleeping for a couple of hours and we are hoping to catch up on some sleep soon. It’s a nice quiet and snowy night in Colorado. What a great day and wonderful start to this new adventure.

Trey’s Year in Cities 2010

Since Ed has started the tradition of listing all the cities he visited each year in his blog, I thought it would be kind of fun to keep a running list for the baby.  He won’t remember any of these but he’s spent at least one night in each of these places:

  • Denver, CO*
  • Section Hut, CO
  • Albuquerque, NM
  • Santa Fe, NM
  • Dallas, TX*
  • Palm Springs, CA
  • Omaha, NE *
  • Cincinnati, OH *
  • Loveland, OH *
  • Salt Lake City, UT
  • Sioux Falls, SD *
  • Indianapolis, IN
  • Lake Monroe, IN
  • Chicago, IL *
  • Boston, MA
  • Newport, RI
  • New London, CT
  • Fargo, ND
  • Grand Forks, ND
  • Yellowstone National Park, WY
  • Bozeman, MT
  • Grand Teton National Park, WY
  • (he’s also been to MN, KY, IA but we didn’t spend the night so it doesn’t count.)

Those cities marked with an * were visited multiple times on non-consecutive days.

The Temptation of Induction

At my 38 week appointment this week my doctor informed me that I could opt to be induced anytime starting at the end of this week.  Here was his sales pitch “You check in the hospital at 6am, have the baby around lunch time and you bring your baby home with you the next day.”  He made it sound easier than dropping your car off to get serviced.

As tempting as his offer was, Ed and I decided to turn it down for the time being.  From the research I’ve done, I’ve found that there is no benefit to the baby to induce at this point.  The only benefit is convenience for us and the doctor.  I also found out that the use of c-sections doubles with inductions.  Not only would a c-section kill my spring snowboarding plans, it would also make the next few months very difficult.

Maybe my thoughts of being induced will change over the next week or so, but for now I’m just going to let nature run its course and hope this baby comes when he is ready.  We can discuss induction again AFTER we’ve passed the 40 week mark, but until then I’ll just keep waiting anxiously!

Patience is a virtue…

that I do not possess.  I really thought Trey (aka Half) was coming this past week.  I did everything I was supposed to – wear my pj’s inside out and sing the song my youngest brother Nick taught me (it’s kind of like a snow dance).  I’ve been taking stairs two at a time (which I don’t recommend when you are nine months pregnant.  I had to ice my knees last night after walking the stairs two at a time at the DU hockey game.)  I’m drinking cinnamon tea and eating spicy foods.

Anyone have any other suggestions?  Please keep it clean this is a family friendly blog and I don’t want to have to remove anyone’s post.

Season’s Greetings

Since we didn’t send out a Christmas card this year, here is a photo to make up for it.  Once our son is born, we will likely begin the tradition of sending out cards.  So be sure to be on the lookout next year.

Merry Christmas!

It doesn’t look like we will have a Christmas baby.  We miss everyone back home in Cincinnati and hope everyone’s day is great.  Here are a couple of photos taken from earlier this week.

Looks like he can decide to come out any day now.

Nursery Is Ready

Over the weekend, Kim and I put the finishing touches on the nursery. We finally found a dresser to match the crib, and with the help of a couple of friends, I was able to move that upstairs last weekend. Kim ordered a glider chair online, which arrived on Friday. I setup the chair on Saturday while Kim went through all of the clothes and started putting things away.  All of our hard work has paid off and we are very happy with how the baby’s new room has turned out.

How do you know if your contractions are real or fake?

At my doctor’s appointment this week I learned that you can drink a glass of wine to decipher between real labor contractions and fake ones.  If the contractions go away when you drink the wine, then there is no need to rush to the hospital.  I told you I love this doctor!

To give you an update on the baby’s room – we are almost finished.  We got a new dresser this past weekend and the glider got delivered today.  Once we get everything put together we’ll get some pictures up for you.

And the official countdown has begun.  I am due two months from Sunday.  The end is in sight!!

3D Photo Shoot

Yesterday, I had my 29 week visit to the doctor and we were lucky enough to get a 3D picture taken of the baby.  The ultrasound tech was taking all kinds of measurements of the baby and when she got to his head she decided it was a perfect opportunity for a 3D shot.  So she snuck one in for us!

No 3D Glasses Needed

All the measurements and other tests that they did came back fine.  The doctor was slightly concerned about the size of the baby’s kidneys so I get to have another ultrasound done in four weeks.   He said it’s nothing to be concerned about he just wants to keep an eye on them.  Hopefully I’ll luck into the same tech again.

The doctor also convinced Ed and me to get flu shots yesterday while we were there.  Neither one of us have ever had one before, but it is highly recommended to parents of newborns since they cannot get a flu shot until they are 6 months old.  Luckily, neither one of us have had any side effects… yet.

I really like this doctor that I’ve seen the last few visits.  He is the only male in the practice and he seems very on target.  Yesterday he asked if I was eating enough and told Ed that he needs to gain 2lbs by the next visit.  I’m all for a doctor who wants us to eat more and wants more ultrasounds done!!

I'm trying to suck my thumb

Tomorrow, Ed and I leave for our last flight before the baby is born.  Then I will be grounded for many months.  Sounds great right now, hopefully I don’t get stir-crazy by the end of the year.  We are headed to Cincinnati and are going to run/walk the Run Like Hell 5k Friday, go to UC’s homecoming game on Saturday and then hit up King’s Islands Haunted House.  My brother, Jason, is working in the haunted house this year so we’ve promised him a visit.
